We passed by the deserted Estancia San Gregorio which used to be a flourishing sheep station until wool prices collapsed in the 1950s. It's now a ghost town but is still used for wool storage. The site also included a couple of shipwrecks.
On the way to our hotel in Punta Arenas, we stopped at an excellent outdoor display of full-size replicas of several historic boats relevant to the area. These included Magellan's Endurance, Darwin's Beagle and the lifeboat Shackleton miraculously used to save himself and his crew by reaching the South Georgia islands from Antarctica.
We had free time in Punta Arenas to check out local parks, statues, the lookout, and museums including the house of Bruce Chatwin's uncle, where Shackleton stayed, and the mansion that Sara Braun, the richest and most famous business woman in the area lived and loved in - it was sumptuous.
Tonight we had yet another delicious dinner featuring local produce. The dinners have been amazing - in Ushuaia king crab was pulled from the tank, cooked and served within 15 minutes. Last night in a tiny hotel in the middle of nowhere they served up a 4 course gourmet meal. And tonight's sampling entree plate and fish main were great.
